Pregnancy in the workplace: Employer obligations to pregnant employees

At the Human Rights Commission 85 per cent of the complaints under the Sex Discrimination Act we received last year were related to the area of employment. 30 per cent were on the ground of pregnancy discrimination or parental status/family responsibility, a remarkable jump over the previous year of 18 percent! In reality however rural and regional Australia is a significant employer of Australian women, and the two million women in regional and rural Australia contribute to their local communities and local economies while caring for their families. Certainly the women of Shepparton yesterday did not believe work-life balance was easy in Shepparton.
