All the documents on the proposed Premises Standards which were tabled in Parliament on 2 December are now available on the Attorney General's Department website at http://www.ag.gov.au/premisesstandards

The Australian Human Rights Commission has now completed its update of the Guideline on the Application of the Premises Standards first issued in March 2011.

The Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards (Premises Standards) are due to come into force on 1 May 2011. They will lead to significant improvements in the level of access required in new buildings and existing buildings undergoing renovation. It is also anticipated that corresponding changes will be made to the Building Code of Australia at the same time.

The Australian Human Rights Commission recently (May 2004) met with representatives from a number of small business organisations to discuss the draft Premises Standards. The purpose of the meetings was to provide additional information on a number of specific concerns that had been raised. The Commission followed up the meetings with a letter which is reproduced below.
