The Social Responsibilities Commission was established by the Anglican Diocese of Perth in the early 1980s, and became a provincial body a decade later. Throughout its history, the Commission has sought to be an advocate for the human rights of all people, particularly those who are the most vulnerable in society. -

The Tasmanian Government recognises the Federal Government's responsibilities for the management of immigration to Australia. During the last decade a policy of mandatory detention has been established for those who enter Australia without proper authority (an appropriate visa). A period of detention allows the Commonwealth Government to ensure that those unauthorised arrivals do not have a health status, character or criminal record of concern to the Government. -

Refugees are a group at high nutrition risk. There is a strong duty of adequate nutritional care for institutionalised persons. The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the largest member organisation for nutrition professionals in Australia. It is notable that DAA has been unable to identify significant input by nutrition professionals into the planning or provision of care for asylum seekers in Australia. -

International and Australian evidence demonstrates the long-term effects of early life experience on health and well being throughout life. The detention of children and young people is poses significant risks to normal development. The exposure of infants and young children to stress either directly or mediated through the experiences of their parents reduces the likelihood of normal brain development. -

Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) is the national professional organisation for Australian nurses. The College was established in 1949 and until the early 1990's was a provider of formal ongoing education for nurses who wished to gain higher qualifications in nursing. Following the completion of the transfer of nursing to the higher education sector in 1993, the College refocused its functions to become the national professional organisation for Australian nurses. -
