Discrimination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: Case Studies (2009)
Jess is an Aboriginal woman who lives in a country area of NSW. Jess came to the city for a holiday and to visit her cousins who she had not seen for quite a while. On her last night in the city, Jess and her cousins decided to go to a restaurant which they had been told had great food and a great view. Jess said that when they arrived at the restaurant the head waiter told them they could not go in because they were not dressed appropriately. Jess said the waiter was rude to them. -

President’s statement
<p>This year the Commission finalised its strategic vision for the coming four-year period. The Strategic Plan 2014-2018 provides a roadmap for all our activities and meets the Commission’s new legal obligations under the <em>Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 </em>(Cth).</p> <p>Over the next four years the Commission will work on three core priorities: human rights education and promotion; ensuring freedom from violence, harassment and bullying; and engaging with business on human rights.</p> -

The lack of coherence and logic in decisions as regards detainees ethnicity and the veracity of their stories - primary decision makers failure rate as compared to RRT decisions which saw many boys kept in detention for up to 12 months longer than boys who arrived at the same time from the same area on the same boat - some friends still remain in detention today up to two years later when the boys know they are Hazara with the same history and the same claim to protection - leading to complete distrust in the whole system -

Valuing Parenthood - Preface
In 1999, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's (HREOC) Report of the National Pregnancy and Work Inquiry, Pregnant and Productive, recognised the importance of paid maternity leave to Australian women and recommended that the Federal Government commission economic modelling to assess the viability and consequences of such a scheme. This interim options paper has been developed in order to consult, inform the debate and examine the options for paid maternity leave in Australia. The economic modelling to support this debate has not yet been done. -

Every day, one in five Australians experiences difficulties or frustrations in performing everyday tasks with everyday things, such as consumer electronics and appliances. As technology develops, an increasing proportion of products are inaccessible to people with a range of different disabilities. These one-in-five Australians are what the author terms the ‘overlooked consumers’.
