Copyright and Publishing Roundtable
Graeme Innes, AM, Deputy Disability Discrimination Commissioner, welcomed participants to the meeting, and expressed the Commission's pleasure that so much good will and commitment had been observed during the preparatory work leading up to the meeting. He noted that many problems impacting on people with a disability are systemic issues, and may not be most effectively resolved through individual complaints which, in the main, provide individual solutions that do not have wider applicability. -

I've always been fascinated by numbers. Although remembering some of my maths exam results, I'm not so sure that they have been as fascinated by me. If you ask a group of people to say the first number that comes into their heads, you'll get a lot of 7's. Perhaps it's because we all have an intuitive awareness that 7 is the smallest number of faces of a regular polygon that cannot be constructed with a ruler and compass. -

Annual Report 2002-2003: Chapter 3
Where a complaint is made under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986 (Cth) alleging breaches of human rights and discrimination in employment, the President or his delegate may report to the Attorney-General where conciliation cannot resolve the matter and an inquiry has satisfied the President there has been a breach of human rights or discrimination in employment. The Legal Section assists the President or his delegate to inquire into the complaints and prepare reports to the Attorney-General. -

"Facilitator or Advisor?: A discussion of conciliator intervention in the resolution of disputes under Australian human rights and anti-discrimination law" (2004)
State and federal anti-discrimination & human rights law in Australia, as in many other countries2, provides for the resolution of complaints of discrimination and breaches of human rights by a process of conciliation. Conciliation is an alternative dispute resolution mechanism for parties to complaints in that it is an 'alternative' to more formal determination of the dispute by a court or tribunal. -

<h2>Organisational excellence</h2> <p>The Commission is accredited as an ‘A status’ national human rights institution (NHRI) by the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.</p> <p>The ICC is responsible for accrediting new NHRIs, as well as re-accrediting existing NHRIs every five years, according to a rigorous and transparent process endorsed by the United Nations.</p> -

Deafness Forum Hearing Access Seminar
I always like to begin my presentations with a humorous anecdote or joke of some kind. For one thing, it lets me know that someone is actually listening, and it also lulls the audience into a false sense of security for the dry parts to follow. So as part of my preparation for this morning's discussion of disability discrimination law in Australia, I decided to find an answer to the important question, "how many audiologists does it take to change a lightbulb". Fortunately there is a website devoted to lightbulb jokes, and so I duly consulted it. -

Notice of temporary exemption application: Sydney-Coffs Harbour travel and tour service
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has received an application from Mr G. Kinny for a temporary exemption under section 55 of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) from relevant provisions of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport and the Disability Discrimination Act to permit deferral of provision of wheelchair access on a public transport and tour service. -

Social Justice Report 2006: Chapter 4: International developments on the rights of indigenous peoples – Closing the ‘protection gap’
In recent years there have been significant developments at the international level that impact upon the recognition and protection of the human rights of indigenous peoples. Most notably, there have been: i) reforms to the machinery of the United Nations (UN) and the emphasis given to human rights within that system; ii) the making of global commitments to action, through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People; and iii) the further elaboration of human rights standards as they apply to indigenous peoples.
