Centuries ago a great many of the inhabitants of this beautiful island were wiped out by colonization and its aftermath. The disappearance of so many is a solemn reminder of the injustice done to the first peoples of this land. Their violent absence is a presence that calls for us to reflect on injustices, suffering and reconciliation in the broadest sense. To them I pay my respects. -

This Chapter considers options for addressing lateral violence in environments that concern our lands, territories and resources. Although this is the beginning of the conversation, the Chapter aims to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities some ideas about how to address lateral violence through the establishment of strong structural foundations and principles. Inquiry into Australia’s Human Rights Dialogues with China and Vietnam (2011)
The Australian Human Rights Commission appreciates the opportunity to provide a submission to the Inquiry into Australia’s Human Rights Dialogues with China and Vietnam. The Commission does not propose responding to all of the terms of reference. Because the Commission’s direct involvement in the Dialogue process is quite limited, it is not in a position to provide highly insightful comments on all areas being covered by the inquiry. As such, this submission addresses two of the terms of reference: -

Native Title Report 2003 : Chapter 2 : Native Title Policy - State and Commonwealth profiles

International legal principles also recognise that Indigenous peoples have economic, social and cultural human rights. Native title, as it is constructed through the Australian legal system, has a limited capacity to meet these human rights standards. -

Getting there: access to public transport
I am particularly pleased to join in opening this international conference on mobility and transport for elderly and disabled people and to be discussing accessible transport here in Western Australia. The Government of Western Australia deserves recognition for the commitment it is showing to making public transport accessible: a commitment adopted in principle, policy and plans and increasingly being delivered in practice. -
