Homelessness is a Human Rights Issue
This paper explores the many ways that homelessness impacts on a person’s ability to enjoy basic rights and freedoms. It shows that homelessness is more than just a housing issue. Homelessness is about human rights. Homeless people are not merely objects of charity, seeking help and compassion – like all Australians, they are individuals entitled to the protection and promotion of their human rights. Since human rights belong to everyone, it is in the interests of the Australian community as a whole to ensure that the rights of homeless people are respected and protected. -

National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention
Barnardos Australia is a family support and out of home care children's welfare agency operating services in New South Wales and ACT. We make this submission based on a number of detainee children and young people that we have provided services for within their own families, and as homeless adolescents. Furthermore, Barnardos has general experience of the impact of institutional care of children and young people, and children living with uncertainty and stress. We have proved specialist support services to refugee Indo-Chinese young people who have experienced detention in refugee camps. -

WORKability I: Barriers noted that many employers are afraid of the 'unknowns' that may arise when employing people with disability. [1] On the one hand, this is the case with any new employee and the way to deal with the risk is to have a probationary period in an employment contract. On the other hand, several First Round Submissions suggested that a 'risk-free' opportunity to test an employment relationship with people with disability would be an incentive to employers to take on new employees with disability.
