Human rights for people with intellectual disabilities in Australia: where to from here?
I will not speak in detail about human rights conventions and disability because this topic is addressed by my co-speaker in this session, Karl Lachwitz. I will say though that international human rights law and human rights debate has not yet acknowledged adequately or sufficiently clearly that people with a disability are part of what the "human" in human rights means. Equally, there has not always been enough attention to human rights dimensions in disability discourse. -

ACFID Awards Night Presentation: Dr Sev Ozdowski OAM (2005)
I would like to commence my brief remarks tonight by acknowledging the success of the member organizations of ACFID. Clearly any organization whose constituent members in 2004 raised $487.4 million, or around 70%, annually of their funds, from the public with only about 14% coming from the government via AusAID is a very effective one indeed. This statistic is also vitally important when one considers the ramifications of how best to engage in constructive policy dialogue with federal governments of any political persuasion. -

Statement on the Same-Sex: Same Entitlements Bill 2007
As this Committee knows well, in April 2006 the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission launched the Same-Sex: Same Entitlements National Inquiry. Since that time we have travelled around Australia to hear, first hand, about the impact of discriminatory laws on same-sex couples and their children. We produced two discussion papers and received 680 written submissions from across Australia. And our final report was tabled in Parliament on 21 June 2007. -

Celebrating human rights in 2020 - a different approach
Every year the Commission holds the Human Rights Awards to celebrate human rights achievements. However, given the extraordinary circumstances of 2020 we believe a new and different approach is needed to celebrate the many human rights heroes who have emerged this year. The current challenges facing Indigenous people in Australia
The position of Social Justice Commissioner was created in 1993 in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and HREOC"s National Inquiry into Racist Violence. It was created to ensure an ongoing, national monitoring agency for the human rights of Indigenous peoples. -

Centuries ago a great many of the inhabitants of this beautiful island were wiped out by colonization and its aftermath. The disappearance of so many is a solemn reminder of the injustice done to the first peoples of this land. Their violent absence is a presence that calls for us to reflect on injustices, suffering and reconciliation in the broadest sense. To them I pay my respects. -

Stop the Traffic 2 Conference Closing remarks (2003)
As Kathleen pointed out this morning this conference attempts to reflect the trafficking trail, to view the process from the perspective of the women involved. I am indebted to her for her clear discussion of the bravery and strong agency of trafficked women. In a context where it is very difficult for trafficked women to speak for themselves, because of the nature of trafficking and their own experiences, it is very important for us continually to carry with us in all our work a central recognition of the lives and circumstances of the women concerned. -
