The Year in Review
<h2>Building understanding and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms</h2> <p>We all have a responsibility to respect the rights and freedoms of others.</p> <p>To make this a reality, the Commission works to build greater understanding of human rights and their importance in daily life.</p> <p>This is one of our two key priorities for 2011-2014.</p> <p>We work with a broad range of groups across the country, providing community education and training initiatives that aim to show how human rights apply in everyday settings and relationships.</p> -

Native Title Report 2004 : Introduction
This, my first report under s209 of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA), is part of a larger project that commenced prior to my appointment as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner in July 2004. The project aims to investigate how native title can be utilised to improve the economic and social conditions of Indigenous peoples' lives. -

I call my paper 'Social Justice Then Native Title' in order to make a clear distinction between two aspects of Indigenous People's struggle; the ultimate goals we are seeking to achieve and the means by which we seek to achieve them. Distinguishing the means and the ends, the former a servant of the latter, is a fundamental tenet of strategic thinking. And it is clear to me that a strategic approach will identify native title as simply a tool for achieving social justice for Indigenous people. -
