The Muslim Council was established in January 2003 and has about 22 member organisations. It is recognised by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils and represents Muslims in NSW. -

The meeting was chaired by Mr Ali Roude, chairperson of the Islamic Council of NSW, and attended by 16 invited participants. Mr Roude and Dr Bill Jonas, Acting Race Discrimination Commissioner, HREOC made brief opening presentations. These notes summarise three separate consultations attended by a total of 34 staff of the NSW Department of Education and Training. The staff consisted of Anti-Racism Contact Officers, Community Information Officers and primary and secondary teachers. The meetings were organised by the Department and facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh and attended by Meredith Wilkie or Edwina Rankin from HREOC. -

The group is an informal social network (formed in late 2002) of Muslim lawyers practising in Melbourne. -

The consultation was organised by the Islamic Women's Welfare Centre as part of its research into racial violence against Muslim women living in Victoria. It was facilitated by Ms Joumanah El Matrah, Manager of the Islamic Women's Welfare Council of Victoria, and attended by Ms Omeima Sukkarieh, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Amna Malkin acted as group leader and interpreter. The consultation was attended by 11 members of the program all of whom were Eritrean Muslim refugee women over the age of 60 who have been in Australia between two and13 years. -

A project aimed at eliminating prejudice against Arab and Muslim Australians was launched by acting Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Bill Jonas in Sydney on 21 March 2003 to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. -

“I have had many experiences of discrimination like many of our community, and probably because of our appearance. What they do is for e.g. I was standing beside the road and was given the finger. Or when I enter the store, some people look at me like a stranger and make me feel uncomfortable, and some even say ‘terrorist’.” -
