The Commission reviews staff performance annually through its Performance Management Scheme. The Scheme provides an opportunity to set goals and priorities in line with our Strategic Plan and to assess the level of individual performance and contribution to Unit outcomes. The Scheme also provides an opportunity to identify and address learning and development needs and to plan effectively for the acquisition of identified skill requirements. -

1.1 The amendments effected by the Sex Discrimination Amendment Bill (No 1) 2000 (Cth) ("the Amendment Bill") go to the core of the guarantee of non discrimination contained in the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) ("the SDA"). 1.2 The provisions of the Amendment Bill are of great concern to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission ("the Commission") and the Sex Discrimination Commissioner ("the Commissioner") for a number of reasons outlined below. -

State and federal anti-discrimination & human rights law in Australia, as in many other countries2, provides for the resolution of complaints of discrimination and breaches of human rights by a process of conciliation. Conciliation is an alternative dispute resolution mechanism for parties to complaints in that it is an 'alternative' to more formal determination of the dispute by a court or tribunal. -
