Commission Website: National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention
I refer to your invitation in December 2001 to make a submission in this Inquiry. I regret that the Law Council has not been able, with its current workload, to prepare a dedicated submission to you in respect of your current inquiry. It would be remiss of the Law Council, however, not to make its general views known to you. -

15. Religion, Culture & Language for Children in Immigration Detention
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) requires Australia to protect children's rights to cultural identity, language and religion. The most effective way of ensuring enjoyment of these rights is to encourage and allow refugee and asylum-seeking children to participate in cultural and religious activities in the community. The Australian community is well equipped to respond to this need as a wide range of cultural and religious opportunities are readily accessible and this remains a key factor in the maintenance of our multicultural society. -

Gillian Triggs on Malcolm Fraser: 'He tried to make Australia a better and fairer place'

Malcolm Fraser was a towering figure in human rights. I greatly respected his compassion and respect for all human beings.

I have known Malcolm for 40 years. He was always generous with his time and demonstrated a great ability to resolve difficult issues.

He loved to tell stories about his days in Parliament and had a lot of wisdom about what was achievable in public policy.

As prime minister, he accepted Australia's responsibility towards asylum seekers, welcoming Vietnamese asylum seekers into Australia following the end of the Vietnam War.
-

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional owners of the land where we meet today and to pay my respects to their elders. I would also like to thank the University of NSW and Professor Daniel Tarantola for organising this event, and the Chair; and to acknowledge my eminent fellow speakers – Sofia Gruskin, Paul Hunt, Justice Michael Kirby and Daniel Tarantola again. It’s an honour to be speaking with such a distinguished group. -

Additional information provided by applicants for exemption under DDA section 55: Cinema captioning and audio description
3. What would be the set up cost of providing both captions and audio description in any one screen? Answer - The set up cost will vary depending on the amount of work required to install the new equipment. I can advise that the equipment (hardware alone) will be approximately $30,000 per screen. It is not possible to judge the labour component due to the complexity each cinema may have in its original design. -
