<p>Six weeks ago I returned to my traditional homeland near Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia.</p> <p>Thanks to modern technology, I am working remotely and continuing my duties as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner.</p> <p>Like many Aboriginal people, I chose to return to country because COVID-19 travel restrictions made homeland communities the safest place to see out the pandemic. As a mature Aboriginal woman, I am statistically at greater risk from COVID-19. It was important to follow the advice of health experts.</p> -

<p>Two of Australia’s human rights leaders have expressed grave concerns in the wake of shocking videos broadcast on ABC’s Four Corners program, which showed children with intellectual disabilities being repeatedly restrained as part of a radical treatment funded by the NDIS.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The episode highlighted the controversial and abusive practices at Irabina Autism Services in Melbourne, between 2019-2021. &nbsp;</p> -

UN calls for national action to protect the rights of children and young people in Australia
<p>The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is calling on Australia to prioritise raising the age of criminal responsibility as part of its Concluding Observations on Australia's performance in protecting the country's children and young people. This comes at a time when there is a strong push around the country to improve our responses to juvenile offending and do more to divert children from criminal justice systems.</p> <p>The current age of criminal responsibility in Australia is ten. The Committee has proposed raising it to fourteen.</p> -

There is much healing needed and we must open our ears and listen.&nbsp;</p>
