The Unlocking Doors Project was a series of forums, workshops and consultations conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission throughout 2006, which brought Muslim peoples and communities in New South Wales and Victoria into a dialogue with Police. This dialogue sought to strengthen Muslim peoples’ relationship with law enforcement agencies and build on the capacity of the police to respond to the incidents of racial and religious hatred and abuse currently being experienced by Muslim peoples. -

These notes summarise three separate consultations attended by a total of 34 staff of the NSW Department of Education and Training. The staff consisted of Anti-Racism Contact Officers, Community Information Officers and primary and secondary teachers. The meetings were organised by the Department and facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh and attended by Meredith Wilkie or Edwina Rankin from HREOC. -

Compulsory Retirement
This report deals with complaints by four pilots who were compulsorily retired at age 60 from their employment with a major airline. The complainants submitted that the decision, taken pursuant to company policy, constituted discrimination on the ground of age . The respondent submitted that the age restriction was an inherent requirement of the job based on safety and operational considerations and did not amount to discrimination. Attempts to conciliate the complaints were unsuccessful. -

Redundancy Arrangements and Age Discrimination
This report concerns discrimination on the ground of age in employment and occupation. It deals with complaints against two state government employers about the use of age distinctions in the formulation of redundancy entitlements. The complainants submitted that the monetary value of the voluntary departure packages they received as employees over the age of 50, and on one case over 60, were substantially less than the value of packages offered to younger employees and constituted discrimination on the ground of age as defined in the Act. -
