These notes summarise three separate consultations attended by 31 primary school students in Years 5 and 6 from three government primary schools in the Fairfield, Port Jackson and Bondi school districts in the Sydney metropolitan area. The meetings were organised with the assistance of the NSW Department of Education and Training and participating schools. Most students who took part in the consultations were either Muslim or from an Arabic-speaking background. Students were required to obtain permission from their parents in order to take part in the meetings. -

Living Spirit - Muslim Women's Project 2006: Report
The project was officially supported by the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Council of Australia, the Equal Opportunity Commission Victoria, the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria, the Islamic Council of Victoria, the Islamic Girls’ and Women's Group, the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues, the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition and Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE. The support of all of these organisations was vital to the overall success of the forum. -

Eight members of the refugee women’s group and two EMC workers attended the consultation which was facilitated by Omeima Sukkarieh (transcript and translating) and Susanna Iuliano from HREOC. The Ecumenical Migration Centre was established in 1962 and became a part of the Brotherhood of St Laurence in 1999. -

Community Partnerships for Human Rights: What projects are we doing?
In 2006 the Ministerial Council on Immigration and Multicultural Affairs endorsed the National Action Plan to Build on Social Cohesion, Harmony and Security. As part of the National Action Plan, the Commission was one of seven Commonwealth agencies funded to undertake a range of projects. -

"I've noticed that in the smaller country towns, even though Muslims do get discriminated against, the towns are a lot better than the big cities. I've noticed it when I go home to Innisfail, which is 65 kms south of Cairns. When I go back home, I have no problem at all. I'm one of the only ladies who wears the scarf. You might see one every couple of months but really there's no-one up there who wears it. I've actually had a ladies come up and ask me 'Oh, why do you wear it? You look so beautiful with it on'." -

Ismaع - Listen: Independent Research
In June 2003, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) engaged the Centre for Cultural Research (CCR) at the University of Western Sydney (UWS) to investigate Australian Arabs' and Muslims' experiences of post-September 11 racism, the extent to which these experiences were going unreported and the reasons for this. Tasneem Chopra is the current Chair of the Islamic Women’s Welfare Council of Victoria. She has been involved with this organisation since its inception over 13 years ago, and has a background in psychology, with over a decade of experience in community development. Tasneem currently works independently as a Cross Cultural Trainer and Consultant specialising in information sessions on ‘Understanding Islam and Muslims in Australia’ with a particular interest in promoting issues of social justice impacting on Muslim women. -

Ismaع - Listen: Strategies Document
As part of the Ismaع project, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (the Commission) investigated existing initiatives that address anti-Arab or anti-Muslim prejudice at a local, state and federal level across Australia. We conducted research and requested information about current initiatives from seven federal government agencies, 37 state and territory government agencies (including education and police authorities), 83 local governments (mostly in areas with substantial Arab or Muslim populations) and 14 non-government and community organisations. -

It was attended by 81 invited participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Ms Hasnija Junuzovic interpreted the Bosnian and Omeima interpreted the Arabic.
