Centuries ago a great many of the inhabitants of this beautiful island were wiped out by colonization and its aftermath. The disappearance of so many is a solemn reminder of the injustice done to the first peoples of this land. Their violent absence is a presence that calls for us to reflect on injustices, suffering and reconciliation in the broadest sense. To them I pay my respects. -

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission was established in 1986. The Commission's goal is to foster greater understanding and protection of human rights in Australia and to address the human rights concerns of a broad range of individuals and groups. We have a particular focus on race, sex and disability discrimination, as well as the rights of Indigenous Australians. It is an independent statutory organisation and reports to the federal Parliament through the Attorney-General. -

This literature review, completed by Associate Professor Toni Schofield of Schofield King Lawyers, explores the intersections between the law, religion and human rights. It focuses on peer-reviewed research that discusses alternative dispute resolution in religious communities and education and training related to alternative dispute resolution and family law issues in Australia. -

The CDEP Scheme and Racial Discrimination (1997)
The CDEP scheme allows Indigenous people to pool their entitlement to social security benefits and work on projects within their community. Participation in such schemes is voluntary and participants must work to receive payment. The report addresses the different entitlements of CDEP participants and social security recipients and the overall status of the scheme in relation to the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth). -

Alcohol Report (1995)
The Alcohol Report analyses whether the introduction of restrictions or prohibitions on alcohol in Indigenous communities would breach provisions of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975. Specifically, the report considers whether or not restrictions on alcohol provision to Indigenous drinkers amount to a special measure under the RDA. -

As part of the Ismaع project, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (the Commission) investigated existing initiatives that address anti-Arab or anti-Muslim prejudice at a local, state and federal level across Australia. We conducted research and requested information about current initiatives from seven federal government agencies, 37 state and territory government agencies (including education and police authorities), 83 local governments (mostly in areas with substantial Arab or Muslim populations) and 14 non-government and community organisations. -

In 2006 the Ministerial Council on Immigration and Multicultural Affairs endorsed the National Action Plan to Build on Social Cohesion, Harmony and Security. As part of the National Action Plan, the Commission was one of seven Commonwealth agencies funded to undertake a range of projects. -
